What is the difference between lighting and a luminaire?

The difference between lighting and a luminaire is specificity. Lighting is the general term for anything that provides electric illumination. Table lamps, pendants, ceiling lights and sconces are all examples of lighting. Luminaire is the term for the portion of a lighting fixture that produces light.
