About the Item

German Abstract Expressionist Works on Paper by Anja Decker, Art Informel, c. 1950–1965 Anja Decker (Berlin, 1908 – Munich, 1995) was part of the generation of German artists who helped shape postwar abstract painting in Europe. Working within the fertile ground between Art Informel, gestural abstraction, and Abstract Expressionism, she developed a highly personal visual language rooted in movement, material, and physical engagement with the painted surface. Painted in tempera, ink, and gouache on paper, this work combines sweeping black forms, fluid drips, and translucent swaths of color in a composition that appears both spontaneous and carefully balanced. Although entirely abstract, the image retains an organic quality, with shapes that occasionally evoke stylized bodies or fleeting human presences emerging from the paint. Decker studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Olaf Gulbransson (1873–1958), the renowned Norwegian illustrator and caricaturist whose influence spanned several generations of German artists. By the 1950s, she had already reached full artistic maturity and emerged as one of the early voices of German Abstract Informel painting, at a time when this new artistic language was still taking shape. During those years, she moved in the circle of the Galerie van de Loo in Munich, one of the most important centers for avant-garde art in postwar Germany. Her work shares common roots with the creative environment that also gave rise to Art Informel, the COBRA legacy, the radical energy of the SPUR group, and other experimental movements that transformed European art during the 1950s and 1960s. This work was selected by the Kunsthalle Emden for the exhibition “Bilder wie Energiemaschinen.” “Otto van de Loo: The Centennial” (February 10 – May 12, 2024), organized to celebrate the centenary of Otto van de Loo, the influential German gallerist, collector, and publisher who played a key role in promoting postwar European avant-garde art. Although it was ultimately not exhibited due to the large number of works considered for the project, it was part of the museum’s official selection process. Numerous works by Anja Decker were included in the exhibition itself, confirming the growing institutional interest in her contribution to postwar German abstraction and the renewed attention being paid to her role within the broader history of European Informel.
