About the Item

A poetic and quietly enigmatic work by Arthur Cyril Hilton (British, 1897–1960), Dawn figure reflects the artist’s sustained interest in the threshold between representation and abstraction. Hilton was a self-taught painter and sculptor from Manchester whose practice developed across both abstract and Surrealist directions, while remaining rooted in observation of the natural and human world. A First World War veteran, he was wounded at the Somme in 1916 — an experience that, though never directly illustrated, lends his work a reflective, often introspective character. Alongside his artistic practice, he worked for the Manchester Education Committee as a school registrar and librarian, maintaining a steady professional life alongside his art. From the 1930s onwards, Hilton exhibited widely in the North West, including at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and Manchester City Art Gallery, as well as with the Manchester Athenaeum Graphic Club, Southport Spring Exhibition, and the Manchester Society of Modern Painters, of which he later became chairman in the mid-1950s. He also had a solo exhibition at Salford Art Gallery and his first London one-man show at Crane Kalman Gallery in 1959. He lived in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester. Dated 1953, Dawn figure is executed in felt pen and watercolour, where a human presence emerges from a loosely articulated, atmospheric setting. The figure is suggested rather than defined, as if caught in a moment of emergence at the edge of day — aligning with Hilton’s broader tendency to dissolve form into light, gesture, and mood.
