About the Item

"Tendrils, Porcelain Nymph" is an original piece by Roche Cruchon made from pastel on paper. This piece measures 15.5”h x 12.5”w framed and is signed en recto. Tendrils is a recent exploration of two major themes :Nourishment and necessity. These pieces were created in a space of need more than creative intention - controlled result was not possible - instead I felt led to give shape to these motifs, resembling hearts, fruits, natural elements. They explore the surprising impulse occuring during a creative pursuit - when control cannot be enforced as part of the process - and images, meanings, come out independently of one's conscious and practical desire. The images resulting seem to have their own free will. When the body, the hands is led by the creation to be given embodiment. Tendrils is a series focused on the essential needs fulfilled through creation - through the emergence of metaphorical representation in the service of healing or freeing oneself. It considers the creative act as a necessity. The works find inspiration in the organic mechanism taking place when nutrients/ energy are being trans­ported to the heart, the organs, in order to feed, to make fuller, healthier, to maintain life, and eventually promote growth. Roche is an artist from France who now lives in the Mediterranean basin. They studied animation at Gobelins and, shortly after graduating, directed a film called “Couchée” for French TV. Having worked as an art director at Buck in Los Angeles, they now focus on creating sculptures, paintings, and illustrations. They find inspiration in the mediums they use, be it digital or traditional, 2D or 3D, still or moving images, and the connections they find between them. Roche explores the intersection of virtual and physical realities, embracing their ever-changing nature. Their art has been exhibited in various European and US galleries, including Leiminspace in Los Angeles and Barney Savage Gallery in New York.
