Two Faces (Purple and Magenta) in Pastel on Paper

By Kelvin Curry

Located in Soquel, CA

Two Faces (Purple and Magenta) in Pastel on Paper Brightly colored faces by Bay Area artist, Kelvin Curry (American, 20th Century). Two faces are shown in profile, looking to the left. They are boldly colored - one in purple, one in magenta - and each wearing earrings. A bright orange and lime green creates even more contrast, making this piece read well from a distance. Signed "Kelvin Curry" lower right. Artist's gallery label on verso. Presented "floating" in a white mat. Mat size: 28"H x 22"W Paper size: 15.25"H x 11.5"W Born in Oakland, California Kelvin Curry's creative destiny was clear early in life. Initially using black and white graphite as his medium and later expanding into mixed media to bring about multi-dimension; as well as a sense of rhythm and grace in the abstract female figure. Kelvin Curry studied fine arts at San Jose State University and has been making and exhibiting art all his life. Curry has a keen understanding of the arts, particularly the black arts movement in and around the Bay Area. Kelvin has exhibited his work in hundred of juried festivals, exhibits, and galleries throughout the country. Visitors from countries such as South Africa, Japan, Australia, France, the United Kingdom, and China have chosen his work to adorn their homes in their native lands. Collectors include Randy Crawford, Nancy Wilson...

Mid Century French Abstract Tree Expressionist Ink Painting

Mid Century French Abstract Tree Expressionist Ink Painting

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: Mid Century French Abstract Tree Expressionist Ink Painting Medium: Black ink and wash on paper, unframed French, circa 1950's Size: 23.75 inches x 15.75 (height x width) Condition: The work is structurally sound though with visible creasing, surface rippling and age related toning throughout the sheet. There is a horizontal fold line across the centre and light edge wear consistent with storage. The ink remains bold and stable. This would benefit from professional flattening and framing. Provenance: from a large collection in Paris Description: A striking mid-century French abstract expressionist ink painting on paper, executed in bold black gestural marks with a strong sense of movement and rhythm. The composition reads as a lively field of calligraphic brushwork, with sweeping strokes, broken textures, and clustered forms that suggest foliage, energy, or a landscape fragment without becoming literal. The confident use of black against the raw paper creates a dramatic, graphic impact, making this an ideal piece for modern interiors, particularly for collectors drawn to monochrome abstraction, post-war European modernism, and expressive works on paper. In this particularly powerful example, the abstract gestures resolve into a sculptural tree form. A thick, sweeping trunk rises from the lower edge of the sheet, curving upward into branching limbs that extend dramatically across the upper half of the composition. The bold, loaded brushstrokes create dense black passages, contrasted with dry-brushed edges that reveal the speed and physicality of execution. The central mass gives the composition weight and presence, while the upward branching creates a sense of growth and vitality. The organic structure is rendered through expressive, economical mark making, aligning closely with the spirit of post-war French Art Informel and modernist landscape abstraction. This fabulous mid century original French expressionist abstract tree painting...

Meg Hitchcock, Work and Days, 2018, Paint

By Meg Hitchcock

Located in Darien, CT

Meg Hitchcock works with sacred texts, cutting letters and combining them to create intricate designs. Her work addresses the limitations of language and interpretation, and questions the exclusivity of fundamentalist belief systems. Letters are cut from a Bible and rearranged into a passage from the Koran, letters from the Koran are transformed into verses from the Torah, and so on. By deconstructing and recombining the holy books of diverse religions, she undermines their authority and animates the common thread that weaves through all scripture. For A Magical Spell for the Far Journey, letters have been cut from the Koran and collaged with burns from Tibetan incense...
