About the Item

This spontaneous and evocative ink sketch by Oldenburg offers a glimpse into the artist’s conceptual process, capturing his signature transformation of everyday objects into playful, surreal forms. The composition is a scattered constellation of ideas, with roughly rendered mushrooms interspersed with the image of a distorted wristwatch, its band rippling as though caught in motion or melting. Each element appears quickly but confidently executed, suggesting an intuitive and iterative flow of visual thought. True to Oldenburg’s Pop sensibility, the drawing flattens the divide between the banal and the fantastic. The mushrooms, drawn with bulbous caps and exaggerated stems, nod to the organic and absurd, while the melting watch evokes a surrealist inheritance, bringing to mind Salvador Dalí’s liquefied timepieces. Scattered notations - “artist” in cursive, a cross-out, the phrase “sex(?) &(?) technology” - anchor the drawing in the realm of conceptual inquiry. These handwritten cues suggest the drawing was part of one of Oldenburg’s many “notebooks,” which he used throughout his life to record sketches and ideas. As such, it’s a document of ideation, emblematic of Oldenburg’s enduring fascination with how consumer goods and mundane items could be elevated, exaggerated, and infused with unexpected meaning. The work is ink on paper and is unsigned, but inscribed by Oldenburg in the upper left and center right. It is housed behind glass in a metal frame with a label from The London Arts Group on the reverse. Size: 8 1/4 inches tall by 7 inches wide (sheet by sight) 14 inches tall by 11 5/8 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches deep (frame) Provenance: The London Arts Group, UK; Private collection, NY; Acquired from the above About the artist: Since the 1960s, Claes Oldenburg has worked at the forefront of the Conceptual and Pop art movements, and he’s best known for his monumental public sculptures of everyday objects. These include “Lipstick (Ascending) on Caterpillar Tracks” (1969, reworked 1974) in New Haven, Connecticut; “Clothespin” (1976) in Philadelphia; “Shuttlecocks” (1992) in Kansas City; and “Cupid’s Span” (2002), a gigantic archer’s bow in San Francisco. These pieces epitomize Oldenburg’s irreverent sense of humor and fascination with American consumerism, qualities which have also pervaded his performances, drawings, writings, and famous “soft sculptures”—cushiony, unserious objects that resemble diner foods and other symbols of Americana. Oldenburg’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Moderna Museet, and the Centre Pompidou. At auction, many of his sculptures—including those of a clothespin, a depiction of a flexed muscle, french horns, a dress, a trowel, a sewing machine, and a typewriter eraser—have sold for more than $1 million. Condition: Good overall condition. Scattered light staining around perimeter of the sheet. Toning to sheet. Horizontal folding crease. Typical wear and scratching to frame and matting.
