Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Egon Schiele stands as one of the most radical and influential figures of early twentieth-century modernism. Initially mentored by Gustav Klimt, he rapidly developed a highly personal visual language marked by psychological intensity, expressive distortion, and an unflinching engagement with themes of sexuality, mortality, and inner experience. Although his career was cut short at the age of twenty-eight, Schiele’s work fundamentally reshaped figurative art and remains central to the development of modern expressionism. Executed in 1908, this drawing is a preparatory study for Schiele’s seminal painting Danaë (1909) and depicts the artist’s sister, Melanie Schiele. While Klimt’s influence is evident in both subject matter and stylistic refinement, Schiele approaches the theme with a striking directness that signals his emerging independence. The figure is rendered with heightened emotional immediacy, anticipating the artist’s enduring preoccupation with Eros and Thanatos—desire and death—presented here without allegorical distance. This work marks a pivotal moment in Schiele’s artistic development, as motifs and concerns that would come to dominate his oeuvre begin to coalesce with unmistakable clarity.
