Baltard was a prominent Neoclassical architect and the father of Victor Baltard, the celebrated architect responsible for the famous iron market halls of Les Halles in Paris. Louis-Pierre Baltard became widely known for his exceptionally precise architectural engravings documenting the great monuments of France during the Napoleonic era. The engraving depicts the interior vestibule and grand staircase of the Institut de France in Paris. The building was originally constructed as the Collège des Quatre-Nations, founded in 1661 by Cardinal Mazarin and designed by the royal architect Louis Le Vau.
