18th-century French school, Two studies for frontispieces, pen and black ink on paper 13 x 8.5 cm each framed: 27.5 x 22 cm each These two drawings, which are particularly delicate, belong to the specific genre of book frontispiece studies from this period. Typically, the lighter-style background was intended to accommodate details related to the book it was meant to introduce. They may not have been intended for specific literary works; perhaps the artist simply sought to demonstrate his talent and skill. Interestingly, he created two complementary types of design: the first blends exoticism, as seen in the Asian-style figure seated in the foreground, with a mysterious and esoteric atmosphere in the setting that combines rustic and ancient elements; the second is much more classical. In both cases, the detail is highly refined and the pen-and-ink work is particularly remarkable, in a style typical of 18th-century France.
