THOMAS BROOMÉ Untitled (Interior Space), 2007 28.3 x 38.8 inches; framed in white wood 35.6 x 46.6 inches ink on paper pencil signed and dated recto In this intricate rendering of a minimalist architectural space, Swedish artist Thomas Broomé draws each object in the room from the words that identifies it. For example, the shape of the stools in the background is delineated not with the details of the actual object itself, but rather the word 'stool' makes up its overall structure. Each drawn detail is executed in the same manner, hinges are not drawn as they appear in reality, rather the written words tell the viewer what he or she is looking at. This work is an excellent example of an inherent feeling of solitude and a social commentary on the banal existence of material objects in the modern world.
