About the Item

Title: French Architectural Tower Study Ink Drawing Brown Paper Bernard Labbe Artist: Bernard Labbe (French, mid 20th century) Medium: Ink on toned artists paper, unframed Size: 11.75 x 8.25 inches (height x width) Signed: Bottom left Condition:good overall with light handling marks, minor edge wear and slight creasing; some natural variation to paper tone Provenance: the artists atelier/ studio, France Description: A refined architectural study by Bernard Labbe, executed in ink on warm toned paper. The composition depicts a fortified structure with tower and adjoining walls, rendered with precise linework and careful attention to architectural detail. Labbe uses fine pen strokes and controlled cross-hatching to articulate the masonry, windows, and structural forms, while leaving areas of the composition intentionally open. This balance between detail and negative space gives the drawing a strong sense of clarity and compositional restraint. The use of brown toned paper provides a natural warmth that enhances the graphic quality of the ink, allowing the subject to stand out with subtle contrast. The perspective leads the eye upward along the wall toward the tower, creating a sense of scale and quiet monumentality. Architectural studies such as this formed an important part of many 20th-century French artists’ practice, often drawn from observation or memory of historic buildings and regional structures. The subject here evokes fortified towns and ecclesiastical architecture found across rural France. Bernard Labbe was based around Laval and L’Huisserie in the Mayenne region of France. He exhibited at the Société des Artistes Indépendants from 1951 and later with the Centre de Liaison des Artistes in Paris, with exhibitions across France and internationally. A clean and decorative original drawing, ideal for collectors of architectural subjects, French landscape studies, or minimalist works on paper with strong linear composition.
