**Description:**
A subtle and atmospheric 20th century European School watercolour landscape, painted on textured handmade paper and depicting a Mediterranean or southern European hillside with umbrella pine trees. The composition is arranged in soft, simplified washes, with dark silhouetted pine trees rising along a sloping ridge against a pale sky and distant coastal or mountainous background.
The painting is particularly appealing for its restrained, modernist treatment of landscape. The artist reduces the scene to broad areas of soft grey, blue, green and violet, allowing the paper’s natural texture to become an important part of the composition. The dark umbrella pines create a strong decorative rhythm across the upper half of the image, while the pale slope below gives the scene a quiet, spacious quality.
The subject has the feel of a Mediterranean coastal hillside, possibly inspired by southern France, Italy or another European coastal landscape where umbrella pines are a familiar feature. Rather than presenting a detailed view, the artist captures the mood of the place through light, shape and atmosphere. The result is delicate, contemplative and highly decorative.
The handmade paper adds considerable character to the work. Its visible fibres, pinholes, deckled edges and irregular surface give the piece a tactile, artisanal quality, enhancing the impression of a travel study, plein air sketch or design-led modernist landscape. The painted area sits within the sheet, leaving the surrounding paper visible and giving the work a distinctive object-like presence.
This original watercolour would appeal to collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, coastal hillside paintings...
