Title: Provence Countryside Olive Trees Pastel Landscape Pierre Neveu Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Pastel on thick paper, unframed Size (H x W): 19.75 x 25.75 inches Signed lower left 'P Neveu 82' Condition: Fair to good overall condition. Visible creasing and handling marks to the sheet. Minor paper loss to the lower margin and light surface marks consistent with studio use. Edges show wear and slight bends. Structurally stable but condition reflected in pricing. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: Original pastel landscape by Pierre Neveu French b 1929 dated 1982 depicting the rolling countryside of Provence. The composition presents a winding rural path leading through cultivated fields and olive trees toward a distant farmhouse beneath a wide southern sky. Neveu captures the warmth and agricultural rhythm of inland Provence through layered pastel strokes in greens, ochres and soft violets. Olive trees anchor the foreground, their twisted trunks and rounded canopies rendered with confident gestural marks. The pale dirt road curves diagonally into the distance, guiding the viewer’s eye toward a sunlit farmhouse set among open fields. The sky is treated with sweeping blue pastel strokes, creating movement and atmosphere while retaining the structural clarity typical of Neveu’s training. The combination of bold line and soft blended passages reflects his interest in compositional form balanced with expressive colour. Although not inscribed with a specific village, the landscape reflects the agricultural character of the Provençal countryside, a subject long favoured by French twentieth century painters drawn to its light, olive groves and cultivated plains. Pierre Neveu began his studies at the École Boulle in Paris before continuing at the National School of Fine Arts and the Studio of Maurice Brianchon. He later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris in 1953. His work centres on compositional structure developed into vibrant yet controlled colour harmonies. Neveu exhibited widely across France including at the Salon dAutomne and the Salon of French Artists where he became President of the painting section and was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. His landscapes of Provence are especially admired for their architectural discipline combined with painterly vitality.
