Description: This expressive watercolor and gouache painting by Pierre Neveu captures the golden light and distinctive architecture of Gordes, one of the most celebrated hilltop villages in Provence. The inscription “Gordes,” clearly handwritten by the artist, firmly anchors the work to this iconic location in the Luberon region—famed worldwide for its cascading stone houses, terraced streets, and magnificent views across the valley. Neveu’s portrayal emphasises the village’s dramatic verticality: steep stone steps lead the viewer upward through a quiet passageway, toward tightly clustered houses glowing in warm ochres, whites, and terracotta reds. Autumn trees in shades of amber and bronze rise from the lower terraces, their dappled leaves catching the Provençal sun. Above, sunlit rooftops form an abstracted mosaic of shapes, contrasted by shadowed façades rendered in deep violets and cool greys. The artist’s characteristic combination of free underdrawing, splattered pigment, and layered washes gives the scene a vibrant immediacy—capturing the sensation of walking through Gordes on a clear, sun-filled day.
