About the Item

Drawing on paper - Signed C. Angst. - Drawing on paper. Frame with glass pane - dimension with frame : 37 x 32 x 1 cm This intimate figurative drawing by Swiss sculptor and draftsman Carl Albert Angst (1875–1965) depicts a tender study of a nude mother and child. The two figures are closely intertwined, the child standing beside the seated woman and gently reaching toward her neck and shoulder. Their physical proximity creates a composition centered on affection, protection and the universal theme of motherhood. Executed with a strong sense of volume, the drawing reveals Angst's sculptural approach to the human body. Rather than relying on sharply defined contours, the artist builds the figures through broad tonal passages and subtle contrasts of light and shadow. The bodies possess a weight and monumentality that reflect his experience as a sculptor, while the softness of the medium lends the scene an intimate and contemplative quality. The simplified forms and emphasis on mass give the composition a distinctly modern character, recalling the renewed interest in classical and monumental representations of the human figure that developed in European art during the first half of the 20th century. Born in Geneva in 1875, Carl Albert Angst trained at the École des Arts Industriels before moving to Paris, where he worked in the studio of sculptor Jean Dampt. He subsequently developed an important career as a sculptor, draftsman and decorative artist. His work was influenced by Auguste Rodin, particularly in its expressive and psychological treatment of the human figure. Angst returned to Geneva in 1911 and became an important figure in Swiss sculpture. His works are represented in major Swiss public collections, including the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève. The themes of childhood, the human body and maternity occupy a significant place within his oeuvre, making this sensitive drawing particularly representative of his artistic interests.
