Title: Mid Century French School Double Sided Nude Figure Studies Drawing Medium: Charcoal and graphite on paper, unframed Size: 19.75 x 25.5 inches (height x width) Provenance: private collection Condition: Good overall with age toning surface wear minor creasing and edge wear consistent with studio use. Drawing present on both recto and verso. Description: A mid century French School academic life drawing executed in charcoal and graphite on paper, featuring figure studies on both the recto and verso. The front of the sheet presents three expressive seated and reclining female nude studies rendered with confident gestural line work. The central reclining figure is more fully developed, with layered charcoal creating depth and weight across the torso and thighs. The flanking figures are handled more loosely, revealing the immediacy of the life drawing session. The reverse side of the sheet contains additional standing and kneeling nude studies, further demonstrating the artist’s disciplined academic training. The lines are fluid and exploratory, capturing posture, balance and anatomical structure rather than surface detail. Together, both sides provide an authentic record of studio practice typical of mid twentieth century French atelier instruction. The visible tonal variation, erased lines and overlapping contours add to the vitality of the composition and reinforce its originality.
