About the Item

'Mother and Child’ is a charcoal on paper by American pop artist, Andy Warhol. Works on paper such as this functioned as a laboratory for experimentation, allowing Warhol to explore repetition, variation, composition, color, and scale. These studies helped shape the repeated imagery that became central to his paintings and screenprints, challenging traditional ideas about originality and artistic value. Through works on paper, Warhol explored how ordinary images could become powerful cultural symbols. Advertisements, consumer products, and celebrity photographs became source material that reflected the growing influence of mass media, television, and advertising in postwar America. Warhol’s works on paper reveal the transition between traditional artistic craftsmanship and his later embrace of mechanical reproduction. His 1950s “blotted line” drawings combined hand-drawn precision with transfer techniques, creating a process that anticipated his later use of photography, tracing, and silkscreen. Warhol’s works on paper are essential to understanding his artistic development because they reveal the foundation of his visual language. They document how he transformed everyday imagery into the symbols that defined his career and demonstrate that these works are not simply studies, but important works that capture his creative process. The artwork is stamped verso, "The Estate of Andy Warhol" and the framed dimensions are 42 1/8 x 34 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches. Provenance: Private Collection, California
