About the Item

Jean-Pierre Laurens (1875-1932) Study of a reading monk Pencil on paper 29.5 x 19 cm Stamp of the Jean-Pierre Laurens Estate on the lower right In quite good condition : crease and dirt in the upper right corner, glued on the four corners, the sheet is undulating as visible on the photographs As the other drawings presented here, this study is very characteristic of the artist's style. It's really interesting to compare these drawings to his paintings and other works to perceive his very original artistic language, which is by some points close to the development of the Art Deco style in sculpture and other arts. Jean-Pierre Laurens was born on March 18 1875 in Paris he died in Fontenay-aux-Roses on April 23 1932. He was the youngest son of the painter Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921), and of Madeleine Willemsens (1848-1913). He was also the brother of the painter Paul Albert Laurens (1870-1934) and the husband of the artist Yvonne Diéterle (1882-1974), sculptor and painter. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1899 onward. He was awarded third class medals the same year, a travel grant and a silver medal in 1900. He received a second class medal in 1906 . Jean-Pierre Laurens was taken prisoner in September 1914, in Rocquigny, near Péronne. Shot in the leg, he was transferred to the Wittenberg camp , south of Berlin. He testified through his drawings of the very harsh conditions of captivity and of the deadly typhus epidemic in the Wittenberg camp in 1915 in Prisoners of war. Notebook in memory of the companions in captivity of the Wittenberg camp (Paris 1918) In 1928, he was entrusted with the decoration of the Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire church in Châtillon ( Hauts-de-Seine ), built by the architects Joseph Flandrin and Yves-Marie Froidevaux . After his death in 1932, his wife, the sculptor and painter Yvonne Diéterle-Laurens, took over the management of this project. He died on April 23, 1932 in his residence in Fontenay-aux-Roses. His works are held by different Fine Arts Museums in France : Beauvais, Bordeaux, Dole, Fecamp, Rouen, Toulouse and by the National Art Museum in Paris. Literature : Benezit

Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) A Man writing at his desk, 18th century interior scene Pastel on paper Signed upper right 20.5 x 15.8 cm Framed under glass : 37 x 31.5 cm It is known that Guirand de Scevola was very interested in the Palace of Versailles and its Old Regime atmosphere, that he often painted it and that he participated in the Versailles Revival movement at the beginning of the century. This probably led him to paint scenes in the 18th century style, for which he was particularly well known and which are still sought after. What is striking is the modernity of the execution of our pastel, which obviously contrasts with its subject in the style of the 18th century. Guirand de Scevoal is a great colourist and he proves it here with eclat, by building up his composition with white pastel highlights, contrasting with brown and black. There is something of the northern painters in this treatment of light. All this, as always with him, is very subtle. The light radiating from the window is almost an abstract notation, but it gives meaning to this interior scene. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) was a French painter. He was student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis...
