Executed in India ink on paper in 1994, this striking drawing exemplifies Menachem Gueffen's enduring fascination with the female figure. A seated woman, shown with both arms raised behind her head, dominates the composition through bold proportions and a sculptural presence. Strong black contours are combined with softer tonal passages, creating a dynamic balance between structure and spontaneity. While the face is rendered with careful attention, the body is deliberately simplified and exaggerated, reinforcing the expressive power of the composition.
The restrained monochrome palette highlights the richness of the ink technique and the artist's confident draftsmanship. Produced from the artist's regular practice of drawing from live models, the work reflects Gueffen's figurative expressionist language, where emotional intensity prevails over strict realism. Both intimate and visually commanding, this original ink drawing is equally suited to established collections of twentieth-century figurative art and to contemporary interior design projects.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Menachem Gueffen (1930–2016) was a painter and draftsman whose career developed across several major European artistic centres. After studying at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, he continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris between 1959 and 1963. During these formative years he exhibited at the Salon des Surindépendants and the Salon de la Jeune Peinture before pursuing his career in London from 1967 to 1988. He later settled in France, where he continued to develop a distinctive figurative practice centred on the human figure, particularly female portraits.
Working with painting, drawing and printmaking, Gueffen developed a highly personal visual language characterised by expressive line, simplified forms and psychological presence. His works on paper reveal the immediacy of his draftsmanship and the freedom of his gesture, qualities that remain central to his oeuvre. His work is held in private collections internationally and is documented in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists and other specialist reference sources.
