About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Pauline Polk' for Pauline Stone Polk (American, 1896-1986) and created circa 1955. Born in New York City, Pauline Stone married in 1917 and, after traveling to Europe, she began spending summers in southern California in 1932. In 1937, Polk moved to California where she assisted Millard Sheets at his Claremont studio for several years. Polk was active in the Los Angeles art scene and served as the vice president of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Commission. She exhibited with success including at the California Watercolor Society (1945-48), Hatfield Gallery, Scripps College (1944), Raymond & Raymond (1945), the Pasadena Art Institute (1946), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1947), among others. The work of Pauline Polk can be found in the permanent collections of museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others.
