About the Item

Enamel on Copper Pendant A small enamel similar to this one was shown in VOGUE Magazine in the early 1950s. Jewelry by the artist is quite rare. There are two examples at the Metal Museum in Memphis shown on their website. Dorothy Sturm (1910-1988) was a painter, enamelist, and medical illustrator in Memphis, Tennessee. She studied art in New York at the Grand Central School of Art and the Arts Student League during the 1930s. Between 1952 and 1978 Sturm exhibited at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. Sturm taught art at the Memphis Academy of Art between 1938 and the late 1970s, and also assisted in establishing a collection of contemporary art at the Memphis Brooks Museum. Betty Parsons, who was among the first dealers to promote the work of Abstract Expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock, embraced Sturm’s work and started exhibiting it in her gallery in New York. With further experimentation and refinement, she was able to produce larger panels that could withstand the weight of additional layered glass. She eventually created large, multicomponent works that could be displayed in multiple arrangements. These works, with titles such as Dark Side of the Moon and Egg of Happiness reflected Sturm’s emotional connectedness to the world at large and her deep concern with finding greater meaning to life.
