About the Item

Edward Hopper 1882-1967, was an American painter and printmaker. He is known as a realist painter who depicted modern American life and landscapes. This picture is drawn in ink and is signed twice, once in ink and once in pencil, and this picture has not been authenticated as yet. The images enclosed contain the before and after cleaning which may help to identify the quality of the work. There is a great deal of information available on Hopper and his works throughout the internet, so I have included a short scholarly biography of his life for your interest. Edward Hopper (1882–1967) was a seminal figure in 20th-century American Realism, renowned for his cinematic depictions of urban and rural life that explore themes of solitude, isolation, and the psychological weight of modernity. His work is characterized by a meticulous use of light and shadow to evoke mood, transforming commonplace American subjects into profound meditations on the human condition. Early Education and Formative Years Born in Nyack, New York, to a middle-class family, Hopper's artistic talent was evident by age five. After briefly studying illustration at his parents' urging, he enrolled in the New York School of Art (1900–1906), where he was influenced by leading realists William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Henri, a key figure of the Ashcan School, encouraged his students to paint the "everyday conditions" of their world, a directive that became the bedrock of Hopper’s philosophy. Between 1906 and 1910, Hopper made three influential trips to Europe, primarily Paris. While largely unmoved by vanguard movements like Cubism or Fauvism, he developed an enduring admiration for Rembrandt and the compositional devices of Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet. Hopper’s rise to prominence was notably slow. For nearly two decades, he supported himself as a commercial illustrator and printmaker, a profession he detested. It was only after turning to etching in 1915 that his painting style began to "crystallize," as the medium forced him to refine his mastery of stark tonal contrasts. His critical breakthrough arrived in 1924 with a successful solo exhibition of watercolors at the Frank Rehn Gallery, allowing him to abandon commercial work. This era also marked his marriage to fellow artist Josephine Nivison, who became his primary model, managed his business affairs, and significantly influenced his creative process. By the 1930s, Hopper was established as a premier American realist. In 1930, his House by the Railroad (1925) was the first oil painting acquired by the newly founded Museum of Modern Art. His most famous work, Nighthawks (1942), remains a definitive icon of American art, encapsulating themes of urban alienation through its cinematic, brightly lit diner setting. Other notable works include: Early Sunday Morning (1930): A hauntingly empty street scene originally titled Seventh Avenue Shops. Gas (1940): A twilight portrayal of an isolated service station. Morning Sun (1952): A study of sunlight and pensive solitude. Despite the mid-century ascendancy of Abstract Expressionism—which he viewed as overly intellectual—Hopper maintained his commitment to a "soft" realism that simplified forms to amplify emotional intensity. He remained prolific until his death in 1967 in his Manhattan studio. His influence persists across diverse media, informing the aesthetics of filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock and modern painters such as Mark Rothko.
