About the Item

Titled "Island" this work is a photographic composition printed on fabric by Lithuanian textile artist Juratė Kazakevičiūtė. Island is the first work in the two-part series "Island I" and "Island II". It is created from a photograph made in Lithuania, depicting a forest rising from a lake island. The image is arranged using a kaleidoscopic principle in which the original photograph is multiplied into a symmetrical structure that emphasizes rhythm, recurrence, and the continuous transitions present in the natural environment. The work is printed on a soft, shiny, silk-like fabric, fitted with wooden hanging sticks, and prepared for immediate display. It is transported rolled and includes a certificate of authenticity. A central aspect of Kazakevičiūtė’s practice is the exploration of connections between organic forms and the human body. Her broader work often incorporates threads, non-woven fabrics, nylons, and soft materials, employing sewing, crocheting, and stuffing methods within her “soft sculpture technique.” These materials form systems that suggest an interrelation between bodily presence and botanical growth, reflecting the artist’s ongoing interest in how natural structures parallel human experience. Juratė Kazakevičiūtė has participated in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad since 1999, including presentations in Italy, France, Germany, Latvia, Sweden, and Poland. She is a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association and LATGA, and her recognitions include the Audience Prize at the Textile Art Biennial (2014) and the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum Award for Best Artwork of the Year (2010).
