About the Item

Linda Stein, I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance (Kamala Harris) 1042 - Feminist Contemporary Fabric Leather Sculptural Tapestry I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance (Kamala Harris) 1042 is from Linda Stein's Sexism series, which advocates an expanded perspective of gender constructions--one that includes non-binary views of masculinities and femininities, allowing for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Kindness. Stein began to produce sculptural tapestries in 2013, in which she combines archival images of a subject with her pantheon of female Exemplars--Wonder Woman, Princess Mononoke, Storm, Nausicaa, Kannon, and Lady Gaga--with multiple fabrics and leather. I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance (Kamala Harris) 1042 highlights Kamala Harris, juxtaposing her with images of Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Flo Kennedy, Shirley Chisholm, and Michelle and Barack Obama. Stein's works are in more than 25 museum permanent collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Georgia Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in the US; Victoria Gallery & Museum and Manchester Art Gallery in the UK; Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland; and Konstmuseet i Skövde in Sweden.

The exhibition, like the eponymous book, covers seven years of this assiduous and patient work through nearly 30 textile works, real freeze frames made of the emotions and memories of the artist, like so many portraits of humanity. .
