About the Item

This large-scale hand-tufted wall tapestry, titled "Fuxico Fofoca," is a one-of-a-kind work by Netherland-based textile artist Lisette van Hoogenhuyze. Rendered as a diptych in wool, acrylic paint, yarn and oil stick on burlap, the piece depicts two sun-drenched tropical scenes populated by faceless, richly colored figures in poses of leisure and intimacy: reclining beneath a palm tree, wading through turquoise water, sharing a quiet moment beside a lily pond. Dozens of small glazed ceramic hands and feet are threaded along the lower edge as fringe, a signature device in van Hoogenhuyze's practice that grounds the tapestry's soft, painterly surface in something bodily and tactile. The title combines two Portuguese words for gossip and female communal exchange. The imagery draws on the mythology of Callisto and Diana, myths in which pregnancy, shame and female collectivity intertwine, reimagined here in a tactile language of fabric and clay. The ceramic hands and feet become symbols of carrying and being carried, of family, community and generations of women who came before, while the vivid, hand-worked tufting gives the surface a plush, textured relief that reads as both painting and sculpture. "Fuxico Fofoca" was created for "Second Skin," a 2026 group exhibition co-curated by CWART and Grège Gallery in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, exploring how identity holds itself together at the border between who we are and what we let show. Van Hoogenhuyze's contribution to that exhibition, alongside a monumental folding screen in burlap and painted wood, examines the freedom to hide, reveal and transform, positioning identity as layered, changing and built through relationship rather than fixed. This tapestry is new and in mint condition. It measures 240 cm high by 170 cm wide and is finished with a reinforced rod pocket along the top edge, so it can be hung from a simple rod or hook without additional framing or hardware. As a unique, hand-tufted work by van Hoogenhuyze, no other copies of this tapestry exist.

For Julia Kiryanova, her artwork is a dialogue – a dialogue which she beautifully facilitates, layering her work with various techniques. At the heart of much of her work an inherent fascination for people lies, intimately displaying abandoned figures seemingly floating in an abstract dream world, where time has stopped everything, but them. Julia Kiryanova has exhibited work at Amsterdam museum, Museum Op Solder and The Holocaust Museum...
