About the Item

Mark Freeman (1908-2003) Mix media - graphite, crayon and color pencil on paper. This lovely Chinatown, New York image measures 10 ½ x 9 inches. Frame: 19 x 16 1/2. It is in excellent condition, is signed lower right and was created circa 1940's. When he was a Columbia student in the late 1920s, Mark Freeman (1908-2003) was well known as the campus artist. He "draws and draws, from dawn till day is done," according to his senior profile in the 1930 Columbian, the College yearbook. After studying at Columbia's School of Architecture, the National Academy of Design and the Sorbonne in Paris, Freeman acquired wide recognition as an artist during a professional career spanning six decades. In numerous drawings he recorded his fascination with the changes in the urban environment, repeatedly visiting demolition and construction sites. Also, an innovator in the early use of airbrush rendering in color, his futuristic depictions of the New York World's Fair of 1939 with its theme of "the World of Tomorrow" are among his works on view at Columbia. Freeman exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. His works are in the collections of more than 20 major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington and the British Museum in London. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1992 and passed away in 2003.
