About the Item

Matthew van Liessum (b. 1989, The Netherlands) is an abstract painter based in Antwerp. His practice is rooted in gestural abstraction, where energetic mark-making meets a strong sense of compositional balance. While his work draws from the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, it is equally shaped by a contemporary sensitivity to rhythm, movement, and material presence. A self-taught artist, van Liessum approaches painting through an intuitive and process-driven methodology. Working with the canvas placed on the floor, he moves around it freely, applying paint with his hands, brushes, and unconventional tools. This physical and immersive engagement allows each composition to emerge organically, without a predetermined structure. Music plays a central role in his practice. With a background as a recording artist, van Liessum translates auditory rhythm into visual form, infusing his works with a dynamic, almost performative quality. The interplay between control and spontaneity is essential—each gesture is guided by instinct, yet refined through a careful search for balance. By leaving his works Untitled, the artist resists fixed narratives, inviting viewers to engage directly with the painting and form their own interpretations. As van Liessum notes: “What appears on the canvas is the result of free-flowing movement; I go around the linen on the floor and mostly use just my hands. I work with a mix of energy and focused composure. Every detail should feel ‘right’ but the composition must never feel restrained.”
