About the Item

"Far From Home" by Michael Adetula is a poignant artwork that eloquently captures the essence of the human pursuit for a better life and the bittersweet experience of being far away from one's roots. In this piece, a young man stands, holding a bag in his right hand, symbolizing the weight of his journey and the tangible belongings he carries on his path to self-improvement. Adetula's work goes beyond the visual representation of a person with luggage; it delves into the profound motivations that drive individuals to venture far from home. The artist beautifully articulates the universal truth that every action is rooted in a deeper reason, often fueled by the pursuit of a better life, new opportunities, and personal growth. The title, "Far From Home," encapsulates the sentiment of distance and separation, emphasizing the sacrifices and challenges that come with leaving one's immediate environment. The narrative of the artwork resonates with the shared human experience of embarking on journeys, both physical and metaphorical, with the hope of returning home one day. The poignant message within "Far From Home" prompts viewers to reflect on the varied reasons people choose to step out of their comfort zones, always harboring the hope of eventual homecoming. Adetula's piece serves as a visual meditation on the complexity of human aspirations, the courage it takes to pursue dreams, and the enduring connection to the notion that there is truly no place like home. About Artist Michael Adetula's paintings convey his fascination for contemporary attitudes which are embellished with fragments of history. Working with images of trendy young people in poses that suggest the hipness of modernity, his characters have on their bodies paintings and designs of elements that tell stories that stretch beyond their present, to the past, or even their genetic memories. Adetula’s work addresses cultural themes of identity, with the aim of documenting how the past reflects on the present. “The time capsules we live in are interconnected in more ways than we can grasp, says Adetula. His primary medium is Acrylic on canvas, which is complimented by his application of colored pens. With this, he is able to create works that have bold brush strokes as well as intricate paintings on the body that also serve as texture. The backgrounds and paintings of clothes worn by his subjects are similar in rendition, while the details on the bodies of his subjects are painted with a mixture of both mediums. There is an application of the philosophy of natural synthesis whereby outside influences, concepts, and ideas come together in Adetula’s compositions. Colors, symbols, tones, and shades unite in the intricate paintings on the body, which include images of trees, cowries, traditional African combs, and flowers. His depictions symbolize tradition, life, belief systems, emotions, and transitions. Creativity for him, “is a powerful tool for exploring deeply, the cultural heritage of the people. His inklings are carefully arranged to reflect the impact of this ideology in the fullness of time. This is clearly evident in his works such as "A Lady with the Swag" and "The Way We Are." Inspired by a fertile imagination, Adetula ’s evocative paintings simultaneously address contemporary cultural life by adding tinges of the past. This vision helps him grasp the clear essence and meaning of his subjects and themes, and by so doing makes clear his message of giving life to his art, and giving his artful messages to society.

Idehen seeks to address and depict our journey of self-discovery. The journey is more important than the destination, I've often learned. Idehen in bini, means to stand firm. To be confident in ourselves, which of course grows as we journey through various paths. Sometimes, one may hold on to arrogance if necessary because the world would often tries to enforce its projections on us. It is imperative to stand firm even as we walk across these borders of existential questions about why we are here and what we are to do.
