About the Item

In “Chinoi #1,” Philip and Kelvin LaVerne return to their favorite theme of Chinoiserie reverie, rendering a lyrical vignette from acid etched bronze and pewter. A lone figure ascends a narrow staircase towards a small pagoda in a setting dotted with various flowers and plants. The composition rises vertically like a hanging scroll, yet the relief and texture anchor it firmly in the language of mid-century American design. The LaVernes were masters of chemical alchemy. Through layers of etching, oxidation, engraving, and hand applied patina, they achieved a surface that shimmers between painting and sculpture. Here, blues punctuate the foliage like porcelain glazes against an earthy ground of bronze and pewter. The background has a softly mottled, almost fresco like presence. The work is signed in the lower center and retains its original label on the verso. The work measures 24.5 inches tall by 17.5 inches wide by 1 inch deep.

Micromosaic Panel "Casco D’oro (The Man with the Golden Helmet)" After Rembrandt

By Studio Del Mosaico Vaticano

Located in Yardley, PA

An exceptional micromosaic made by the Vatican Mosaic Workshop after Rembrandt’s celebrated “Man in a Golden Helmet.” Composed of thousands of hand-cut glass tesserae, the work captures the brilliance of Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro with extraordinary precision. The armor glows with metallic depth, and the sitter’s expression retains its quiet intensity which made the original painting so famous. The Vatican’s Studio del Mosaico...

Austrian 19th Century Patinated Bronze, Giltwood and Ebony Wall Plaque

Austrian 19th Century Patinated Bronze, Giltwood and Ebony Wall Plaque

Located in West Palm Beach, FL

An exceptional and most decorative Austrian 19th century patinated bronze, giltwood and Ebony wall plaque signed K. Sterrer. The striking wall decor is centered by the wonderfully executed patinated bronze plaque depicting a handsome sculptor in his atelier draped in a flowing garment working on a bust of a woman resting on a stool while holding his hammer and chisel. He is standing on a wall bracket like element with an impressive open winged eagle above an acorn finial, a tied carpenter's square and a tied bell hammer with a caliper and fine foliate branches at his feet. In the background is a beautiful maiden also draped in a wonderful flowing garment siting with her legs crossed on the plinth of a capital where another maiden, possibly a statue, is standing with a globe and sextant in her hand with plaques, busts, wings and curtains above. The plaque is set within an elegant mottled giltwood frame with beautiful richly carved wrap around berried laurel bands with a fine angled ebonized Fruitwood border. All original gilt and patina throughout. Karl Sterrer...
