About the Item

This enchanting mural proposal done with graphite is exemplary of Hubert Massey's style. Within the piece pre-industrial civilization finds itself side-by-side with the towering and difficult accomplishments of industrialization with all of the four classical elements subtly woven into the piece. This proposal drawing was a preliminary sketch that was made for the Flint Institute of Arts Museum. Unframed this piece measures 10" h x 45" w. Hubert Massey is a Michigan artist who works in a variety of media to create large public art installations. Massey is noted for collaborating with communities to create art that tell their stories. His bold vibrant images are installed in Detroit at the Museum of African American History, at the Detroit Athletic club, TCF Bank Convention Center (formerly Cobo Hall), Paradise Valley Park and Campus Martius. Chances are if you’ve visited Mexican town, Greek town, the Cultural Center, or any number of other landmark community attractions, you’ve encountered the remarkable work of master muralist-artist Hubert Massey. Massey is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and has studied at the University of London, Slade Institute of Fine Arts. He studied with Stephen Dimitroff and Lucienne Bloch, apprentices to muralist Diego Rivera, and is one of few African American artists painting in the true Buon Fresco style and the only known, African American commissioned fresco artist in America. An award-winning Kresge Fine Arts Fellow, his distinctive fresco murals grace the halls of such visible Michigan destinations as the Flint Institute of the Arts, Detroit Athletic Club, and his alma mater, Grand Valley State University, where he earned an honorary doctorate of fine arts in 2012. In 2014 the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority commissioned Hubert to create the first large-scale mural completed for Cobo Center since 1987. A fresco painting, the mural features images and tell stories of Detroit community pride. It is titled: “Detroit: Crossroad of Innovation” and measures 30’ x 30’. He said he learned the “lost technique” of producing frescoes two decades ago from the assistants to the creator of the most famous fresco mural in Detroit, Diego Rivera. Two of Rivera’s assistants were in Detroit for maintenance work on the 1932 Detroit industry murals. It created a special opportunity to learn the craft himself, Massey has said. “Back in the early '90s, the Art Foundation of Michigan chose 12 artists to study under Diego Rivera’s assistants,” Massey said, and he was one of them. “They came in, and after they did a restoration, they did a workshop, and the workshop was on the process of how to do a fresco. Out of the 12, I was the only one to pursue it. River sand, lime, marble dust and oxidized pigment. That’s all it is. Everything’s from the Earth.” “Public art begins with the community it will serve. In fact, after nearly 20 years of creating large-scale public works of art for various cities, communities and neighborhoods throughout the Midwest, it is my belief that public art should be, first and foremost, meaningful to those who surround it.” – Dr. Hubert Massey

"Untitled #1", Mixed Media on Paper

By Artis Lane

Located in Detroit, MI

This mixed media on paper from the seminal artist Artis Lane is one of the many model paintings from her long and illustrious career. The subject is a nude male standing in pose. Artis Lane, in her many nudes, chose to depict a diversity of bodies, of all shapes, colors, and sizes. This work was recently exhibited adjunct to the "Steps Towards Justice: Artis Lane's Portraits of Rosa Parks" exhibition at Collected Detroit in 2021. Most recently in January 2021 Ms. Lanes' dynamic sculpture bust of Rosa Parks was chosen from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC to reside in the President's Oval Office as a reminder to all who visit or see it via press photographs of her courageous demand for equal rights. It is a constant source of inspiration. All my life I have worked on three levels of consciousness: Portraits, Social Injustice & Metaphysics. In my work I strive to heal, uplift and inspire viewers and collectors to find perfection in their own being. - Artis Lane Artis Lane lived and worked in Los Angeles for over twenty years. She knew many celebrities, movie stars and individuals who moved in those circles. She was a sought after portrait painter. This particular painting of the famous movie star, Zsa Zsa Gabor, shows why. Artis has captured the personal essence of her subject, a warm, friendly woman, though famous, is not absorbed in her notoriety. This piece is signed by the artist on the lower right. Born Artis Marie Shreve in 1927, near an all-Black village in North Buxton, Ontario, Canada. After three years of art college in Toronto, Canada, Artis moved to Detroit where she met and married journalist and activist Bill Lane. In Detroit Artis Lane continued her training at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), Morris Brose (Bronze Sculptures), Herb Babcock known for blown glass) and Larry Butcher (mixed media abstract artist.) While in the Motor City she painted and sculpted the portraits of many of the business and political leaders of the day; Governor George Romney, Ford family members and Coleman Young, the Mayor of Detroit. After her divorce, she was invited by Diahann Carroll...

Reg Butler Abstract Figurative Signed "Manipulator"

Reg Butler Abstract Figurative Signed "Manipulator"

By Reg Butler

Located in Detroit, MI

"Manipulator" is an abstracted figurative drawing in charcoal and graphite. The figure seems to be "manipulating" some object it holds without visual clarity as what that object is leaving it up to the viewer to fantasize about its intent. The drawing has a monumentality to it that speaks of Butler’s influence by Henry Moore, for whom he worked at one time, and echoes the style of the sculptures that Butler created. Butler most often used the female figure in his sculptures and drawings and although it is not certain, this drawing may be of a female figure engaged in some hand work with perhaps a mechanical toy that resembles a bird. Butler trained as an architect and worked as a blacksmith before becoming Henry Moore’s assistant and developing his own talent as a sculptor. His first solo exhibition was held in 1949 at the Hanover Gallery in London. In 1952 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in the same year won a much publicized competition for a Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner which, however, was never made. After winning the 'Unknown Political Prisoner' competition in 1953 he became one of the best known sculptors during the 1950s and 1960s, and also taught at the Slade School of Art. Reginald Cotterell Butler (28 April 1913 – 23 October 1981) was an English sculptor born at Bridgefoot House, Buntingford, Hertfordshire to Frederick William Butler, formerly a police constable, and Edith Barltrop. His parents were the Master and Matron of the Buntingford Union Workhouse. His father was a relative of the poet William Butler Yeats; Edith was of Anglo-French descent. Butler studied and lectured at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London from 1937 to 1939. He was a conscientious objector during the Second World War, being exempted from military service conditional upon setting up a small blacksmith business repairing farm implements. Butler's later work consists of lifelike models of female figures, such as Girl on a Round Base, that have something in common with Hans Bellmer and the sculpture of Allen Jones and prefigure the work of Ron Mueck...

"Travelers", Abstract Drypoint Etching and Aquatint, Numbered and Signed

By Richard Jacobs

Located in Detroit, MI

"Travelers" is a work that displays Richard Jacobs early Balinese influence. This abstract work made with drypoint etching manifests a layer of depth and contrast that is achieved through an Indonesian technique of drawing the lines of the resist or printing it with a copper stamp that allows an artisan to selectively color the work through the soaking process. "Travelers" is exemplary of this earlier aquatint process before Jacobs would go on to apply a diversity of colors to his work. The print is 39 x 29 inches and is signed and numbered from an edition of 30 by the artist. Numbered edition may not necessarily be number 16 as there are multiple prints in the possession of Collected Detroit...
