About the Item

An exceptional and highly sculptural fiber art wall installation titled Oblique Ombre by acclaimed American textile artist Jane Knight (1928–2013). Signed with the artist's original copper nameplate, this one-of-a-kind composition is comprised of 31 individually wrapped jute elements that together create a striking diagonal ombré transition of rust, burnt orange, golden yellow, and natural fibers. Measuring 48 inches wide by 53 inches high, the work exemplifies Knight's sophisticated command of color, rhythm, texture, and architectural scale. Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Jane Knight received her BFA from the University of Michigan in 1951 before serving as Art Director for Detroit's legendary J.L. Hudson Company and designing for the Cranbrook Theater School. Through her husband's work at Eero Saarinen & Associates, Knight became immersed in the remarkable circle of designers and architects that defined postwar American modernism. She counted Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, and George Nelson among her friends and contemporaries, influences reflected in the clean geometry and architectural sensibility of her work. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Knight produced a remarkable body of freestanding, suspended, and wall-mounted fiber sculptures that transformed traditional textile techniques into sophisticated works of fine art. Her signature process involved meticulously wrapping heavy jute cores with vividly colored wool, creating richly textured surfaces that interact beautifully with changing light. Oblique Ombre demonstrates her ability to transform simple repeating forms into a dynamic composition through subtle shifts in color and proportion, resulting in a work that feels both sculptural and painterly. Knight's work was exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Chicago, and New York, featured in publications devoted to fiber art and modern design, and acquired by important corporate collections including BorgWarner and Chrysler. Like her contemporaries Sheila Hicks and Olga de Amaral, she helped elevate fiber from a traditionally craft-based medium into one embraced by collectors of modern and contemporary art. Retaining its original copper signature plaque, Oblique Ombre is an outstanding example of Jane Knight's mature work and a rare opportunity to acquire an important American fiber sculpture from one of the movement's pioneering female artists. Its architectural presence, exceptional craftsmanship, and warm modern palette make it equally compelling in residential, corporate, or gallery settings.
