About the Item

Katie Yaquinto says of her work… My practice is rooted in identity and transformation. Working primarily with found and repurposed textiles, I assemble fragments into large, patchworked compositions. I see this material as both my medium and my metaphor. The process of assembling these fragments into a larger piece reflects how our identities are formed: layered, evolving, and shaped by experience. I see the patchwork technique not just as a visual or material choice, but as a symbolic one. Just as our sense of self is informed by experience, each scrap I use brings its own presence into the work, contributing to a larger whole. My background in fashion design and merchandising influences my relationship with textiles and my interest in how materials communicate. I’m drawn to the ways we express identity through what we wear, how we decorate our homes, and the objects we surround ourselves with. These decisions become our visual language. In my work, I reflect on how we curate and construct identity not just internally, but in the world around us. _____ Katie Dumestre Yaquinto is an emerging mixed media artist living and working in New Orleans. She attended LSU where she studied fashion design and merchandising. Her work examines the ways our identities are shaped and change over time based on our lived experiences.

Artist Comments
I watched as this painting revealed itself, color layer by color layer. My process is of reduction; subtracting as canvas gets full of expression until a cohesive composition evolves.

About the Artist
Sheila Grabarsky is an abstract painter living and working on the New Jersey shore. She is known for her bold and expressive gestural brushstrokes, juxtaposition of contrasting colors, and spontaneity in her paintings. Sheila’s animated paintings have been compared to those of Vasily Kandinsky, the Russian painter and art theorist referred to as “the father of abstraction.” And, like Kandinsky, the essence of inner beauty and the potency of the human spirit are key factors in her art. Fun fact: Sheila’s work is featured in a 2016 movie called American Pastoral...
