About the Item

Existing at the interface of reason and wonder, Lyndi Sales work is guided by a desire to explore the limits of human perception. Working across hand-woven textiles, sculptural installation, intricately cut perspex, drawing, embroidery, and collage, she draws inspiration from quantum physics and spiritual philosophy, often interrogating the properties of light or the crystalline structure of chemicals. She attempts to set aside what obscures our vision and perceive reality in its entirety, animated by the conviction that the universe functions as a single living organism in which every entity forms part of the whole, echoing William Blake's sense that if the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to us as it is: infinite. Her abstract motifs, drawn from scientific imagery, trace structures that repeat at both microscopic and cosmic scale, interweaving into symbols recognizable across multiple cultures. Her unique personal aesthetic that fuses art and science allows us to imagine a more utopian world that exists beyond our current limits of perception and sight, prompting viewers to imagine connections between all beings from the microscopic to the cosmic. Sales is a South African artist based in Cape Town. She studied at the University of Capetown, where she received her BFA in 1995 and her MFA in 2000. She represented South Africa at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, has taught as a visiting lecturer at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town and at the University of Stellenbosch, and was a merit award winner in the ABSA Atelier Awards. She has held residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, where she was also a grant recipient, and at the Frans Masereel Centre in Belgium. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including her recent solo show at the Museum for Papirkunst in Denmark. Sales’ work is held in major public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, Texas A&M University, the FRAC de Haute-Normandie, the Société Générale Art Foundation in France, Sasol Sandton, Facebook Sandton, the University of Cape Town, McGill University in Montreal, the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection at Florida Atlantic University, and Red Bull Hangar-7 in Salzburg.
