About the Item

Title: Lantern Column VI Year: 2019 Medium: Mold blown glass, cast polymer rubber, steel, cast iron Size: 69.5 W 7 X D 7 (in) ( metal base 18 X 18 in.) Niho Kozuru is a Japanese-born mixed media artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. Using glass, rubber and clay, Kozuru casts and reconfigures architectural, industrial and organic forms into sculptures with undulating silhouettes. Her Lantern Columns series consists of seven vertical towers ranging from four to seven feet tall, exhibited across the United States and Japan, including at the Fukuoka City Museum. Created in part at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina, the series incorporates more than sixty blown-glass components formed in molds of Kozuru’s own design. Each sculpture is assembled around an internal steel armature and crowned with vivid cast-iron finials. Throughout the works, transparent glass elements reveal brightly colored mesh wrapped around interior steel rods, creating shifting layers of texture, light and depth. Hand-dyed cast polymer rubber disks both secure and protect the glass components while introducing rhythmic intervals of color. Kozuru’s interest in turned forms originates in her family’s ceramic practice. She comes from generations of clay artists in Fukuoka, Japan, where histories of ceramics continue to shape her understanding of form, material and process. Her work is held in the permanent collections of deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum, Sheldon Museum of Art, Danforth Museum, Fuller Craft Museum, The Art Complex Museum, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Dana-Farber, Fidelity, Google, and the Nogata Tanio Museum, among others. Kozuru received a BFA from Parsons School of Design and an MFA from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
