Findlay Gallery label verso. 0riginal frame and mat with normal wear due to age. The American packet ship Montezuma was a 3-masted, square-rigged ship, built in New York in 1843 by Webb & Allen for the Black Ball Line of packets between New York and Liverpool. 924 tons; 162' x 35' 8" x 21' ft. Montezuma was wrecked on Jones Beach, Long Island, on 18 May 1854, on a voyage from Liverpool to New York, carrying approximate 500 immigrant passengers. All passengers and crew were saved. Biography William Birchall William Birchall was an American born watercolorist from Cedar Rapids, Iowa who later chose to emigrate to England where he settled permanently in Hastings. From his studio there he painted well into the 20th century earning acclaim for his excellent style reminiscent of traditional 19th century marine painting. Painting chiefly in watercolors, Birchall created many fine portraits of deep water sailing vessels and was noted as well for his pictures of shipping in and around the Thames estuary and the English channel. He was known to have traveled as far south as Gibraltar seeking authentic background for his paintings.
