About the Item

Bai Ming Untitled III 2013 Ink Wash on Hand-made Paper Size: approx. 25 x 39 inches (63.5 x 99.1 cm) Signed lower left Inscribed and dated lower left Gallery-issued COA upon request Ink and mineral pigment on hand pulled paper, this untitled work from 2013 finds Bai Ming working at the intersection of classical Chinese brush tradition and contemporary abstraction. Broad passages of saturated black ink pool and bleed across the fibrous surface, offset by warm ochre and earthen umber washes that lend the composition a geological, almost topographic character. Fine calligraphic lines thread through the picture plane like fault lines, while clusters of rhythmic dashes and dots animate the lower register with a scattered, percussive energy. The artist's control of tonal gradation — from the deepest saturations to the palest, translucent stains — reveals a mastery of ink dilution rooted in centuries of literati practice, here redirected toward a wholly non-representational language. Neither landscape nor gesture alone, the work occupies a contemplative middle ground, inviting the viewer into the meditative interplay of void and mark that has defined Bai Ming's practice across both ceramic and two-dimensional media. Signed and dated lower left. Bai Ming (b. 1965, Yugan, Jiangxi Province) is among the most internationally recognized figures in contemporary Chinese ceramics, working fluidly between porcelain, ink, and oil painting. He serves as Director of the Department of Ceramic Art at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, where he is also Executive Vice Director of the Art Museum, and holds membership in UNESCO's International Academy of Ceramics alongside his role as Secretary-General of the Ceramic Art Council of the China Artists Association. His work marries the technical inheritance of Jingdezhen — the subject of his National Book Award–winning study of the city's traditional ceramic-making techniques — with a distinctly contemporary sensibility, drawing on Daoist and Buddhist philosophy to explore emptiness, line, and the meditative surface. Since 1996 he has mounted seventeen solo exhibitions in China and abroad, including a landmark 1998 pairing of his ceramics with those of Picasso at the Taipei International Art Fair, and a 2014 solo exhibition at the Musée Cernuschi in Paris designated an official project of the fiftieth anniversary of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations. His writing extends across fourteen monographs and twenty-eight edited volumes, and his work is held in major museum and institutional collections internationally. contemporary Chinese abstraction, ink on rice paper, gestural abstraction, sumi ink painting, mineral pigment, calligraphic abstraction, ochre and umber palette, abstract landscape, Chinese ink wash, literati abstraction, tonal gradation, brushwork abstraction, monochrome with earth tones, signed and dated 2013, works on paper Bai Ming, Chinese contemporary artist, Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design, International Academy of Ceramics, contemporary Chinese ceramics, Jingdezhen, Chinese ink painting, China Artists Association, Musée Cernuschi, Chinese abstraction, contemporary Asian art, blue chip Chinese artist, museum-collected artist, ceramic artist and painter, Yugan Jiangxi
