About the Item

Grid of Memories is a densely orchestrated meditation on the architecture of remembrance, exile, and urban imagination. In this series, Cuban American artist Bernardo Navarro transforms the city into a living psychological map: fragmented, layered, unstable, and luminous. Executed in mixed media on heavy paper, the compositions evoke the visual rhythm of improvised neighborhoods, scaffolding, electrical networks, rooftops, and emotional cartographies suspended between Havana, Miami, and the abstract metropolis of memory itself. Strongly influenced by the celebrated urban visions of René Portocarrero, Navarro reinterprets the Cuban city through a contemporary geometric language. Where Portocarrero’s cities pulsated with ornamental exuberance and tropical mysticism, Navarro introduces a fractured architectural syntax closer to coded systems, digital ruins, and post-industrial abstraction. The result is a vibrant visual field in which every line appears simultaneously structural and fragile — a city constantly being built and remembered at the same time. Color operates emotionally rather than descriptively. Bursts of yellow, blue, crimson, violet, and black move across the surface like signals, memories, or distant lights emerging through atmospheric haze. The compositions oscillate between aerial map, musical notation, and urban archaeology, inviting the viewer to navigate the work as both landscape and mental state. Part of a new generation of Cuban American abstraction informed by migration, memory, and layered cultural identity, Grid of Memories positions Bernardo Navarro within an important lineage of artists exploring the transformation of Caribbean visual traditions into contemporary cosmopolitan language.
