About the Item

"Naviglio", White, ochre, and blue. Constructivist, abstract landscape. Mixed media on wood panel. Measures: 84.5 x 74.5 x 3 cm. In inches: 33.27" x 29./33". x 1.18" "Naviglio" fits within a contemporary aesthetic that blends elements of concrete art, arte povera, and utopian architecture. The artist creates a monochromatic low relief, where forms appear to be carved or molded directly into the surface—evoking unearthed fragments of a forgotten civilization. Color use is minimal but deeply intentional: a single strip of vivid blue runs horizontally across the composition. This gesture calls to mind artificial canals or water lines found on old maps—possibly referencing the Naviglio system of canals in Italy, which may be the inspiration for the piece’s title. This blue channel serves as a symbolic axis: it connects, divides, and breathes life into a composition that, without it, might feel static or barren. The rough textures and incised forms reference the archaeological, the industrial, and the urban all at once. There is no direct figuration, yet the marks evoke stairs, passages, doors, pathways, and ruins. Castagna appears to be building a topography of memory, an abstract cartography where emotion and rationality intersect. Stylistically, the work suggests a sculptural language (made by artists such as Louise Nevelson, Jorge Oteiza, or even Antoni Tàpies). However, Castagna brings a unique sensitivity by giving prominence to emptiness, visual silence, and restrained gesture. The artwork doesn’t shout—it suggests. It doesn’t illustrate—it evokes. In essence, this piece is a visual meditation on space, history, and the passage of time. The blue line introduces not only a chromatic break but also a poetic dimension—it could represent water, a horizon, or a scar. It is the key that transforms a structure into a map and a map into a story.
