About the Item

This large colourful abstract painting is by Charles Robb, son of the famous Canadian artist Jack Bush. Charles Robb’s lyrical, expressive paintings are highly regarded by critics and collectors worldwide. Like his internationally celebrated father, abstract artist, Jack Bush, he was a consummate colourist who painted under the name, Charles Robb. Robb’s distinctive rhythmic style also reflected another lifelong passion—music—for he was a professional jazz drummer who liked to listen to music as he painted. He typically began each painting by building up layers of paint and adding vibrant markings to create a rich spatial field of colour with visible depth. His colour palette often featured intriguing choices and unusual colour combinations. Robb’s paintings are further distinguished by a recurring motif that reviewers have described as a “gestural flick". This calligraphic, ink-like mark punctuates the composition and contributes to its sense of rhythm and movement. Deep Purple Falls is a superb example of Robb’s signature approach. Here, against a warm, earthy ground, a ‘swarm’ of simplified abstract forms in luminous yellow, melon, gray, cream, navy, cranberry, white and black appear to swirl around the colour field. Critics have likened this elegant, dynamic movement of organic forms to “wind-blown flower petals,” “schools of fish,” or “sunlit pond ripples.” The title of this piece likely references the opening lyric from a 1963 pop hit called Deep Purple—“When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls.” “I think my love of painting large is that when I’m right up at the canvas I’m enveloped by the whole thing. I have a feeling it’s like an orchestra conductor or a band leader and he’s got the musicians circled in front of him. He looks to the far left and he’s got the violins. He looks far to the right and he’s got the brass. And so he’s got this whole thing coming together to make one thing.” Charles Robb “There’s a kind of straightforward and direct honesty with the way he works—his work ethic and his work habits.” Jack Pollock Charles Robert Bush (1938-2023) was born in Toronto in 1938. He was one of three sons born to Jack Bush, one of Canada’s most important abstract artists. Robb attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and although initially drawn to painting traditional landscapes soon began exploring his father’s genre-abstract expressionism. His first solo show at age 25 was at the prestigious Andre Emmerich Gallery in New York City. He developed a close friendship with the Toronto artist, art educator and dealer, Jack Pollock who also represented him for many years. Robb’s work was featured in more than 20 solo exhibitions in Canada and the US, and can be found in noteworthy public (museums and galleries) and private art collections the world over.
