About the Item

This large abstract painting is by Charles Robert Bush, son of the famous Canadian artist Jack Bush. Charles Robert Bush’s lyrical, expressive paintings are highly regarded by critics and collectors worldwide. Like his internationally celebrated father, abstract artist, Jack Bush, he was a consummate colourist who painted under the name, Charles Robb. Robb’s distinctive rhythmic style also reflected another lifelong passion—music—for he was a professional jazz drummer who liked to listen to music as he painted. He typically began each painting by building up layers of paint and vibrant markings to produce a complex surface with visible depth and atmosphere. His colour palette often featured intriguing choices and unusual colour combinations. Robb’s paintings are further distinguished by a recurring motif that reviewers have described as a “gestural flick". These calligraphic, ink-like marks punctuate the composition and contribute to its sense of rhythm and movement. Oakville Mariner is a superb example of Robb’s signature approach to the paintings he created in the 1980s. Against a visually rich, deep blue background flecked with black, soft, fluid brushstrokes of white accented with pink and green flow across the canvas. Critics have likened this dynamic almost musical movement of organic forms to shapes found in nature; here, the effect is evocative of ocean waves. “I paint the music.” Charles Robb Charles Robert Bush (1938-2023) was born in Toronto in 1938. He was one of three sons born to Jack Bush, one of Canada’s most important abstract artists. Robb attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and although initially drawn to painting traditional landscapes soon began exploring his father’s genre-abstract expressionism. His first solo show at age 25 was at the prestigious Andre Emmerich Gallery in New York City. He developed a close friendship with the Toronto artist, art educator and dealer, Jack Pollock who also represented him for many years. Robb’s work was featured in more than 20 solo exhibitions in Canada and the US, and can be found in noteworthy public (museums and galleries) and private art collections the world over.
