Signed in the back This significant work of Informal art centres on the famous “knot” by Emilio Scanavino (Genoa, 1922 – Milan, 1986), a tangle of intricate lines that represents the artist’s distinctive trademark. This element is not merely aesthetic, but serves as a symbol of existential anguish and man’s inner conflicts. The knot appears to “float” in an undefined space, assaulting the canvas with strands and tensions that evoke a state of unease. It features warm shades of red and earth tones, typical of certain phases of his work where the background becomes a vibrant, almost organic space. The brushwork is precise and controlled, far removed from pure automatism. Scanavino seeks a mental order whilst representing emotional chaos. One notes the presence of circular structures and straight lines that ‘cage’ or contain the central tangle, creating a dialogue between rationality and impulse. Situated between European Informalism and Abstract Expressionism, Scanavino develops a language based on the rituality of the mark. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition.
