Cubist Figurative French School, early 20th century circle of Georges Braque (French 1882-1963) oil on canvas, unframed canvas: 42 x 35 inches Provenance: private collection, Paris Condition: minor surface scuffing and abrasions but overall in very sound and good condition A refined and highly decorative Cubist composition, executed in the first half of the 20th century. The work is unsigned but clearly showing strong influence from Georges Braque and is most likely, at least, from his circle; Georges Braque, one of the principal pioneers of early 20th-century modernism, alongside Picasso. The painting presents two stylised female figures constructed through a restrained, architectonic geometry—softly faceted forms, muted tonal transitions, and a deliberate flattening of space. The palette of warm ochres, creams, and earthy browns is entirely consistent with the later Synthetic Cubist aesthetic, while the interplay of figure and background reflects the analytical structuring associated with Braque’s studio practice. Particularly notable is the balance between figuration and abstraction: the figures remain legible yet are reduced to essential volumes, with simplified facial planes and rhythmic contouring.
