About the Item

San Francisco Bay Area Seascape with Ships in Oil on Cardboard Seascape with large ships by Honora Berg (American, 1897-1985). The ocean is shown in saturated colors - teal, yellow, green, and red - with black lines creating a choppy, turbulent texture. The horizon is high in the composition, conveying the size and power of the ocean. Two large ships navigate the waters, each with two smokestacks. The sky is shown in yellow and red, likely just after sunset. In the foreground, there are a few partially submerged rocks in similar colors. Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Estate stamp on verso "Estate of Honora Berg - Miller Fine Art" Initialed and numbered "HB 104" on verso Unframed. 19.5"H x 26"W Honora Berg (American, 1897-1985) was an Abstract Expressionist and Bay Area Figurative School artist who studied at the San Francisco Art Institute with David Park, Elmer Bischoff and James Budd Dixon. Modernist Seascape with Sailing Ships, Textured Impasto Marine Scene

Located in Genève, GE

Signed "Berger" in the lower right corner. A powerful modernist seascape depicting sailing ships emerging through a dynamic, heavily textured surface. This mid-20th-century painting captures the essence of maritime atmosphere rather than precise detail, with rigging and masts sketched in expressive linear accents against a dense, abstracted field of sea and sky. Executed with thick impasto and layered palette knife work, the composition is built through tonal variations of whites, greys, blues, and muted earth tones. The energetic surface treatment creates a sense of movement and turbulence, evoking waves, mist, and shifting light conditions at sea. The ships appear almost ghostlike within the composition, partially obscured by the painterly texture, reinforcing a modernist approach that prioritizes sensation and structure over realism. The work aligns with post-war European abstraction, where figuration and landscape dissolve into material and gesture. The painting offers strong visual presence and tactile appeal, making it an excellent statement piece for contemporary or mid-century interiors. A compelling acquisition for collectors of modernist marine painting and expressive abstract seascapes. modernist seascape, abstract marine painting...
