About the Item

Title Two Vessels and Folded Drapery French Modernist Graphite Still Life Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Graphite pencil on artist paper unframed Size 12.75 x 19.75 Height x width in inches Signature Unsigned Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Good overall condition with gentle surface undulation, light handling marks and age related toning to the paper. There is minor wear and soft creasing around the sheet edges and corners, together with faint graphite rubbing and transfer visible verso, consistent with the medium and studio storage. The drawing remains clear and presents attractively. Description An expressive graphite still life by Jacqueline Boisselot, depicting two substantial domestic vessels surrounded by folded fabric, paper or loosely arranged studio materials. The composition is built through layered pencil marks, softened shading and repeated contours, giving the work both observational clarity and the immediacy of a working studio drawing. A rounded lidded vessel occupies the left side of the composition. Its broad body is modelled through gently graduated graphite, with darker passages defining the neck, shoulder and shadowed area behind it. The object rests upon a shallow plate or folded cloth, whose sweeping curved edge establishes a strong horizontal movement across the lower part of the drawing. To the right stands a larger jug or kettle-like vessel with a broad body, projecting spout and angular handle. Its pale surface is articulated through selective areas of shading rather than continuous modelling, allowing much of the paper to function as reflected light. Darker graphite marks around the handle, spout and lower edge give the form structure and distinguish it from the surrounding materials. Between the two vessels, overlapping folds and angular shapes create a lively transition. These forms may represent drapery, folded paper or other objects arranged upon the tabletop. Boisselot does not describe them precisely, instead using their diagonals and changes of tone to connect the heavier rounded objects and lead the eye through the composition. The drawing is particularly successful in its contrast between volume and line. The vessels feel solid and weighty, while the intervening materials are treated more freely through quick, searching strokes. Repeated contours reveal the artist adjusting proportion and placement as she worked, preserving an appealing sense of process. The background remains lightly indicated, with faint horizontal and vertical marks suggesting an interior wall or surrounding studio space. This restraint prevents the setting from competing with the objects and allows the pale paper to introduce light throughout the composition. Graphite has been applied with a varied touch. Some areas are softly shaded and blended, while others retain firmer directional strokes and visible hatching. This combination gives the work texture and movement while maintaining its quiet monochrome character. From an interior perspective, this is a versatile and approachable drawing. Its neutral palette and domestic subject would suit kitchens, dining rooms, studies or relaxed living spaces. The landscape format would work particularly well above a console table, desk or sideboard, while the expressive handling gives it a collected rather than overly formal appearance. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, interiors, still lifes, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by confident observation, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to line, tone and spatial balance.
