About the Item

San Francisco’s elegant Nob Hill caught the eye of Japanese-born, Californian painter Jean Kalisch ((1912-1995). In this atmospheric cityscape, the artist has rendered the famously exclusive area through the prism of Cubism, presenting multiple facades done in glistening greens, almost suggesting Dorothy’s first glimpse of Oz. Kalisch began her art training as a child with the discipline of Chinese brush and ink calligraphy. Then she studied landscape drawing, and oil painting. Her life took a different path when at 17 she moved to Tokyo to pursue chemistry studies toward a career as a pharmacist. In 1954, Jean met and married an American serviceman with the Judge Advocate’s Office and moved to California, where she resumed her art studies and eventually exhibited widely, becoming known for her landscape, marine and street scene paintings, like this one.

Robert Goodnough Abstract Masterpiece

Robert Goodnough Abstract Masterpiece

By Robert Arthur Goodnough

Located in San Francisco, CA

Robert Arthur Goodnough: 1917-2010: Very important and well listed American abstract expressionist artist. He has had Auction results as high as $52,500 but sells for much more in galleries and privately online. This spectacular powerful abstract was most likely painted in the late 1940s as that was his style during that period. His style would change in the 1950s and then again in the 1960s. He is considered a second generation abstract expressionist after the first generation which included Pollock, Rothko and deKooning. Several art gallery owners and critics said he was allergic to self promotion and was the most underrated artist of his generation. In 1952 apparently someone twisted his arm, because he had a one man show at Tibor Nagy...
