About the Item

Early Abstract expressionist mixed media by John Franklin Koenig. John Franklin Koenig, (1924-2008), was an internationally renowned artist, better known in Europe and Japan than in the United States.   Koenig was born in Seattle, Washington.  At a young age he became interested in art, particularly the Asian art he found at the Seattle Art Museum.  He was drafted into the US Army in 1943, and fought in Europe until the end of the war. While awaiting to return to the United States, he took a course at the University for American soldiers in Biarritz.  Upon his return to Seattle, Koenig enrolled at the University of Washington where he studied the French language and literature, and art and design.   After earning a degree from UW in 1948, Koenig moved to Paris, where he would live for most of the next 30 years.   In Paris, Koenig began working on collages and paintings, inspired by European artists and by the works on paper he saw during his many trips to Japan.   In 1986 Koenig received the Gold Medal of the City of Paris and was later made a Commander of the French Order of Arts and Letters. In 1989, the Paris Arts Center held a retrospective of his work.   Koenig's artworks have been shown in nearly 150 solo exhibitions around the world and held in the collections of numerous art institutions, including the Musè d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musè National d’Art Modern in Paris, the National Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, Japan, the Musè des Beaux-Arts and Musè d’Art Contemporain in Montreal, Canada, the Musè de L’état in Luxembourg, and the Seattle Art Museum in Seattle, Washington.   This work is a painting and paper collage on paper, and is dated 1953. Signed and dated by the artist, lower right.  It was purchased in 2004 from the collection of University of Washington design professor Warren Hill. An early and vibrantly colored abstract expressionist work, dated 1953, by an artist whose entire career was spent as an abstract expressionist. The work measures 18.5 x 20 inches sight size, and 23 x 25 x 2.5 inches overall, including the original framing.
