Canadian-American artist Julie Hedrick creates atmospheric abstract paintings that have an inviting luminous quality and provide a visual treat for the viewer.
Hedrick was born in Toronto in 1958 and graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design Painting Studio Program. Since 1998, she has been represented by Nohra Haime Gallery in New York City. Today, Hedrick is based in Kingston, New York, where she works out of an airy studio that was once a church chapel.
Hedrick’s workspace sits between the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River, where she takes daily walks for inspiration. Much like it had for those who came before her, the play of light upon the water and the changing colors of the seasons inform much of Hedrick's work. The artist, who is also a poet, indeed draws frequently on the majesty of nature, an influence can be detected in the tranquil blends of colors that populate her canvases or found simply in the names of paintings such as Wave, A Rose Mist Rising and Green Earth Deep II.
Hedrick was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for professional artists in 2012. In 2018, she and her husband, musician Peter Wetzler, jointly received the Kingston Distinguished Artist Award. Hedrick has shown her work throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Colombia. She frequently exhibits at Artport Kingston.
