About the Item

This abstract oil on canvas by French artist Lucien Beyer, painted circa 1960, is entitled by the artist : Vers l'immortalité. It is representative of the expressive freedom of Post-War European abstraction. Built through layered brushwork and fluid gestural passages, the composition combines earthy browns, olive greens, soft blues, pinks, ochres, and vivid accents of red, creating a richly animated pictorial surface. Its vibrant palette and painterly energy place it within the tradition of French lyrical abstraction and mid-century modern art. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lucien Beyer (1908–1981) was a French painter associated with the influential Lyon-based Groupe Témoignage, founded by Marcel Michaud in the 1930s. He exhibited alongside important figures of modern French art, including Jean Le Moal, Jean Bertholle, Étienne-Martin, and François Stahly. Initially influenced by aspects of Surrealism and spiritual symbolism, Beyer's work gradually evolved toward a highly personal form of abstraction. Rather than depicting reality directly, he sought to translate the rhythms, sensations, and underlying forces of the visible world into painterly form. Following World War II, he participated in the Salon de Mai, the Surindépendants, and exhibited at Galerie Jeanne Bucher alongside leading representatives of post-war abstraction. Although less widely known than some of his contemporaries, Beyer occupies a distinctive place within the history of post-war French painting. His work bridges poetic figuration and lyrical abstraction, making it increasingly sought after by collectors interested in overlooked figures of twentieth-century European modernism.
