About the Item

Marie Laforey is a self-taught artist based in New York, US who maintains a sustainable art practice using primarily organic material. Laforey enjoys the tactility of working with organic mediums and learning how to craft preserved moss, clay, feathers and other natural elements into beautiful abstract compositions. Primarily inspired by nature, repetition, patterns, the particularity of texture and geometry are essential elements that are omnipresent in her works. About the Paths series: Marie Laforey's new body of work call Paths builds hard-edge color fields directly on raw linen, letting the weave stand as a color in its own right alongside her saturated blues, greens, magentas, and burnt siennas. Rather than covering the canvas edge to edge, she lets open, textured ground interrupt her geometry — so that absence carries as much visual weight as pigment. The connection to Josef Albers is felt rather than quoted. Where Albers nested squares to study how adjacent hues shift one another's temperature, Laforey works with off-register grids: bands, slivers, and stepped rectangles that meet at uneven intervals. Her narrow connecting strips — sometimes just a few inches of teal, gold leaf, or ochre — act as hinges between larger fields, guiding the eye and testing how a small interval of color can recast the planes on either side of it. Composition takes clear precedence over gesture throughout the series. Edges are taped, flat, and exact, yet the linen's visible weave keeps the work anchored in its own material presence, resisting a purely optical reading. Marie Laforey’s works have been placed into various private collections in the US and in corporate and hospitality facilities. She is represented by the Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York City, USA.
