About the Item

Matt Mullican (born September 18, 1951 in Santa Monica, California) is an American artist and son of artists Lee Mullican and Luchita Hurtado. Mullican received his BFA from CalArts in 1974, and rose to prominence as a member of the "Pictures Generation" along with such artists as Troy Brauntuch, Jack Goldstein, David Salle, James Welling, Sherrie Levine, Cindy Sherman, Louise Lawler, Richard Prince and Robert Longo. His work is concerned with systems of knowledge, meaning, language, and signification. Mullican also works with the relationship between perception and reality, between the ability to see something and the ability to represent it. Mullican's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since the early 1970s at venues including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Haus Der Kunst, Munich, Germany, the National Galerie, Berlin, Germany, the Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, Netherlands, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, and The Museum of Modern Art, NY. Mullican's work has been reviewed in Artforum, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, The New York Times, and Modern Painters, among others. Mullican has taught and lectured at Columbia University, New York, The Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, The London Institute, Chelsea College of Art and Design, England, The School of Visual Arts, New York amongst several others. Mullican is represented by Brooke Alexander Gallery, Peter Freeman, Inc. and Tracy Williams, LTD., Manhattan, Mai 36 Galerie, Zurich, Galerie Johann Widauer,Innsbruck and Galerie Nelson, Paris.

Don Fink (1923-2010) was a well known and well listed Abstract Expressionist who studied at the Art Students League and the Academie Julian. He was born in Duluth , Minnesota, but later moved to Europe where he established himself as an artist. He was first based in Paris where he was a member of the "Jeune École de Paris" (with Karel Appel, Debre, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Antoni Tapies, Dumitresco, Messagier, Zanartu , etc.) and later moved to Barcelona. A large retrospective of his earlier works was held in Madrid in 1998 with the following promotion: Don Fink Returns to Madrid: American "action" painter Don Fink (b. Duluth, Minnesota, 1923) has a show at Galería Rayuela through September 25. The artist divides his time between Barcelona, Paris, and New York. This is his second exhibition in Madrid in four years. The works on view date from 1952 to 1970. Their "active" surfaces meld the arts of tattooing, calligraphy and three-dimensional terrain mapping, resulting in a meditative and rewarding experience for the viewer.
